Budapest’s Castle District is a fairytale come true. This area offers sweeping panoramic views alongside a spectacular castle straight out of a movie and plenty of romantic side streets to explore. The Castle District in Buda has so much to see and do. Explore this beautiful neighborhood with this guide to Budapest’s Castle Hill.
What to do in Castle Hill
Matthias Church

Located in the heart of the Castle Hill next to Fisherman’s Bastion, Matthias Church is truly spectacular and its beauty rivals other churches all across Europe. Both the exterior and interior are breathtaking and reflect Budapest’s unique architecture and whimsical nature.
Fisherman’s Bastion

Fisherman’s Bastion is a towering monument with lookout points that offer fabulous city views. The gothic turrets and towers built into the structure transport you back to medieval times. Neighboring the famous Matthias Church, this is a picture-perfect location to get lost in this maze of a fortress. It gets very crowded during peak hours, so I recommend starting your day here as early as 8:00 am.
Explore Old Town

Wandering the cobblestone streets of Castle District feels like stepping into another time, with its pastel façades and quiet courtyards at every turn. It’s the kind of place best explored slowly while pausing for photos, browsing small shops, and popping into a nearby café. Old Town offers a more romantic side of the city that complements Budapest’s lively energy.
Castle Hill Funicular

Funicular is the most epic way to travel up to Castle Hill. Give your feet a break and ride up the hill in style by funicular. This unique railway will take you from the Danube riverbank in Adam Clark Square to Buda Castle in minutes.
Buda Castle

Once the primary residence of Budapest’s royals, Buda Castle is a palace complex built in the Gothic style. The Castle is no longer a royal residence, but it is home to the Budapest History Museum and the National Gallery.
Hungarian National Gallery
No City Girl’s Guide is complete without a visit to the Hungarian National Gallery. Located within the historic Buda Castle, the museum offers an overview of Hungarian art with grand architecture and sweeping views of the Danube from the dome.
