Tucked along Spain’s Mediterranean coast, Valencia has everything you want in a European city getaway: a romantic old town, beautiful beaches, and ridiculous food scene. As the birthplace of paella, the city is also a foodie’s paradise, offering the best paella in the world and amazing tapas bars. Valencia is often looming in the shadows of other great cities like Madrid, Barcelona, or Granada. Setting itself apart, Valencia blends old-world Spanish charm with a young, modern energy. This is a place I can return to time and time again, and feel like it’s a whole new city each trip, which I think is really special. Whether you’re adding Valencia to your Spain itinerary or just in need of a warm weekend getaway, use this guide to plan your dream getaway to this buzzy coastal city.
Valencia’s Must-Do’s
Explore the City of Arts and Sciences

Valencia’s City of Arts and Sciences is like a futuristic utopia, unlike anywhere I’ve ever been. It’s an area made up of the city’s premier museums, which happen to be architectural marvels. Here, you’ll find the Oceanogràfic (Europe’s largest aquarium), the Museu de les Ciències (science museum), the L’Hemisfèric (3D cinema), and the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía (opera house). This complex of culture is an absolute must-see in Valencia.
Wander Through the Old Town
In contrast to the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences, wandering through Valencia’s Old Town is like stepping back in time, where history and city life blend seamlessly. Narrow cobblestone streets open into stunning plazas framed by centuries-old architecture. From the Gothic grandeur of Valencia Cathedral to the lively energy of Plaza de la Virgen, Valencia’s Old Town is equally charming as it is dynamic and exciting.

Eat Paella Where It Was Born
No visit to Valencia would be complete without tasting its most famous dish: paella. Whether you enjoy it by the sea or in a cozy city eatery, savoring paella in Valencia is not just a meal—it’s a celebration of the city’s culture and flavors. Book a paella cooking class if you’re interested in a more immersive and hands-on experience! Airbnb Experiences offers tons of locally-led classes, often held inside the host’s home.
Visit Mercado Central

Food markets and Spain go hand-in-hand simply because this country is home to some of the best in the world. Valencia’s Mercado Central is no exception. Housed within a modernist building, the market stalls overflow with vibrant arrays of fresh seafood, fruits, vegetables, cured meats, and artisanal products. Local vendors are eager to share their knowledge on Valencian products, making it the perfect spot to sample traditional flavors and discover regional specialties.
Visit the Silk Exchange

A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Silk Exchange is a breathtaking example of Gothic architecture. Built in the 15th century, this building once served as the center of the silk trade. What makes this spot so incredible are its intricate stone carvings, soaring columns, and stunning vaulted ceiling.
Climb Torres de Serranos
Get panoramic views of the city from these historic gates that once protected the city’s entrance. Once you finish the climb up, it’s the perfect spot to pause, snap photos, and soak in the timeless charm of Valencia from above.
Valencia’s Nightlife
Now for the fun stuff— you’ve come to Happy Hour with Sophie for a reason, no?
Atenea Sky
For breathtaking views right in the heart of Valencia, Atenea Sky is the place to be. Sip on cocktails and enjoy some tapas (the croquetas were to die for) while enjoying a 360-degree panorama of the city skyline. There is a small fee to enter, but I was desperate to kick my feet up with a cocktail after a long day of sightseeing.
270º Terrace at Barceló
Located on the 10th floor of the Barceló Hotel, this rooftop is different from Atenea Sky because you get a view of Valencia’s modern areas. 270º Terrace at Barceló is a sleek rooftop lounge with a small plunge pool and unbeatable views of the City of Arts and Sciences on one side and Old Town on the other.
Café de las Horas
Café de las Hora has an old-world elegance about it… and an appreciation for freakiness. Famous for inventing the Agua de Valencia cocktail and its over-the-top neo-baroque decor, this lounge is a must-visit for anyone wanting an outside-the-box nightcap.
Lladró Lounge Bar
Lladró Lounge Bar is an elegant bar doubling as an art gallery. Located inside the luxurious Hotel Palacio Vallier, this cocktail lounge is for those interested in a slightly more elevated and chic experience.
